The Auction Block II is a completely non-profit online auction site. This site is designed with the express purpose of providing an easy-to-use, public means of selling items over the Internet. There is no charge for either posting items to this site or bidding on items posted to this site. However, it's up to the bidder and seller to actually make the transaction happen. I take no responsibilty for anything except helping seller find buyers.
This site is currently in a state of Alpha testing. Nothing you do on this site right now counts, except for voting for new categories. So, please, go post items for auction. Go bid on everything you see. And, please, if you have a problem with anything, let me know! I intend to move the site into Beta testing at the end of March.
A Little History: Back in the summer of '96, I wrote a simple auction site to enter into an web design contest. Not only did my site win in two categories of the contest, it actually become a popular tool for Internet commerce. This site was The Auction Block. Due to some versioning conflicts caused by server crashes, the code for The Auction Block began to do bad things to the server hosting it, and in autumn of '97 I had to take it down.
In the summer of '97, a web designer contacted me about writing some scripts for an auction site he'd been contracted to do. He had a totally different idea for how to approach the site design than I had used with The Auction Block. We put the site together, and I liked the results. The site we generated was Fine Jewelry Direct. FJD not only had better scalability, but it had many more features than The Auction Block.
In the autumn of '97, after I had to take The Auction Block down, I immediately began planning for a new auction site. After things had died down with FJD, I began work on the Auction Block II. I took everything I had learned doing FJD and incorporated more new features. After completing FJD but before beginning The Auction Block II, I discovered object-oriented Perl. With this tool, I was able to build much more modular, robust, logical and complex scripts. So, here we are.
A Little About Me: I graduated Vanderbilt University in May of '97 with a double-major in electrical engineering and computer science. I code as a hobby, and really enjoy providing useful tools to the Internet community. I am currently working for Sun Microsystems and so I don't have near enough free time to work on all of the projects on which I want to work.
Enough rambling. Go and enjoy!
